Embrace it!

I cannot imagine myself without a computer, cell phone, television, and many other technology devices. It is true that we have depended on these devices and perhaps have become lazy but I believe that it has made us stronger a country and has brought a lot to our society as a whole. Through the internet we can share many cultures, and ideas, and for this reason I have to agree with Kelly in his article called, “Embrace it,” that we do need tehcnology and we should take advantage of what is given to us. He says, “A person on the Internet sees the world in a different light,” meaning that everyone is looking at things on the web and reacting differently. We all have different views and opinions that are shared through the internet.

Although we do tend to depend on technology a lot, and that it has become a little scary, the truth is that we adapt ourselves to whatever we have that is necessary to use. Now we have the internet and it helps people come together, disagree on things, and as we use it we keep it going. I know that we can go crazy when we do not have internet, or when the light is out and we cannot watch the television or whatever, but we have to embrace what is given to us and keep it going to help our society grow.

Issues!

1. Society should not discriminate people who are different than them for example larger people.
2. Colleges and universities should provide more funds to make college affordable.
3. College degrees should not be a stereotype of wether a person is smart or not.
4. Stores like holister, victoria secret, and other clothing stores should provide sections for larger women because we are all not the same.
5. Office assistants should get paid at least 9 dollars an hr.
6. Math and science should not be more appreciated than other subjects like art or music.
7. Teachers should get paid more.
8. Islamic people should not be descrimimated or treated different just because of the actions of other individuals in the past.
9. Gay men should be allowed in the military.
10. Barack Obama should forget about the health reform he is supporting.

Proposal Essay!

First of all my topic for this proposal essay is going to be talking about the crime rate in Houston. Houston will be having the new mayor soon, and there has been a lot of tension about the crime rate in Houston and how Houston should increase the number of police officers all around the dfferent areas of Houston to decrease the crime rates, but the question is how and is this going to help. I am very interested in investigating crimes and such so this is why I am going to be doing my proposal essay on something that I like. I am going to find evidence that shows how increasing police officers will decrease crime rates in Houston, and by far means look for other solutions to decrease the crime rate in the Houston area.

Houston has a problem, that problem is the fact that our crime rate in the Houton area feels like it is increasing and many citizens feel unsafe. The problem aims for all the Houstonians that live in Houston especially in areas where there are many crimes committed, for example third ward and the northside of Houston. These areas in particular affect many public facilities like the University of Houston where we have students that are at high risk of getting injured. It is not just students that are at risk, but our families, our friends, and our co-workers. Everyone will be a victim of crimes committed by other people, they can be severly injured and inclusively die from these acts if we do not take some action. The problem has not been solve because there is a lack of enforcement officials that go around the cities to prevent these violence acts. I believe that maybe the problem is that we do not have enough police man to petrol the areas of Houston, and that perhaps they are not doing their job correctly. The problem can be fixed by hiring more police officers that are going to be capable of actually taking down dangerous people that deal with all sorts of crimes. Houston needs well train officers who can in fact protect us from danger. There is a big cost involve in hiring more officials, we are talking about perhaps increasing their wages, and paying off their salaries, but at the same time if we decrease the crime rate there will be less crime to deal with at a court house and in county jail which can be very expensive too. This proposal is a better way to deal with crime because we are actually taking action in catching people comitting crimes. I know that crime affects everyone’s lives. I do not want to wake up tomorrow knowing that my house has been robbed or that my parents have been killed because of the lack of safety in Houston.

Practical Proposal Assignment

Since I was in the nineth grade I was always interested in crime stories and everything that had to deal with crime investigations. With that being said, the stories that were the most interested through out the three publications were related to crime or politics. In the Houston Press there is a special report on parolees not paying off what the state ordered them to pay to the victims. It was interesting to know how many criminals get away with these things, letting us know that things are not fair and right. What interests me the most is how the state of Texas being the state with zero tolerance when it comes to crime lets criminals walk away without paying their huge debts with the victims. I would understand if the amounts were little, but criminals only pay up to 3.1 percent of what they owe. That is just not right. I would like to investigate more about this and do something about it to pass a law that monitors criminals that way they will pay back one way or another. Now, moving on to the Daily Cougar publication, I am thrilled to know that a hispanic mayor will be running as we come closer to the city elections. The first thing that I thought when I saw the article about Roy Morales and his crime concern in Houston on the Daily Cougar it catch my attention because I read e-mails all the time about how UH students get assaulted for minor things like a phone, couple of dollars, and such. We have to deal with crime all the time and the truth is that is scary. It concerns all of us because we have family to protect. I am glad that Roy Morales is concern of the crime rate in Houston because like he said,”We have a murder rate higher than that of New York City, so we are not doing a good job of deterring crime,” and it is so sad to hear this because New York city is known for being the largest city in the United States as well as the high crime rate. I am kind of scared that Houston has become so dangerous because I have younger siblings and their well being is the most important thing to me. Also, in the Houston Chronicle publication I found an artcle that talked about a guy who murdered a 16 year old girl and left her in mid-downtown. This was catchy because I had just read the article about Roy Morales and his concern about crime in Houston. I am just shocked how Keith Allen Kopferer, who is twenty, just shot the girl in the face just because he was really mad at her. I mean he is just 20 almost the same age as me and I cannot stop and think on how his life is going to be. He had many opportunitites and now he has to be in jail for many years for something that could have being prevented starting with the parents.

The story that is most interesting to me is the one published on the Houston Press called,” Crime doesn’t pay back: A Houston Press Special Report on Court-ordered Restitutions in Texas,” because it talks about what interests me the most laws, crimes, and my state. My research questions concerning this issue would be, why does the state of Texas does not monitor criminals in order to pay the victims, and just discharges them sucessfully? For my research I would have to first look at the laws that talked about parolees and how they work with those issues. I would also have to look at the policies that involve the criminals debt with the victims and try and do some research on some criminal cases that involve this issue. In order to get information I would have to interview a criminal lawyer that knows more about these policies, it would be very helpful if I could interview someone that is involve of all the debts and research about how much they pay and why is the state not doing anything about the criminals’ debts with the victims. I can also find information by looking at the Constitution of Texas on the website called, Texas Legislature, where they have all the laws, policies, and the constitution of Texas. I would also research on the HPD website that has everything related to Houston and the law enforcement officials.

For this practical essay after reading through this articles now I am interested in writing about Houston’s crime rate, state laws concerns, basically something dealing with what actions to take to reduce crime or make criminals pay off what the state had assigned them to pay. I was also interested in writing about Houston’s entertainment because in some ways I feel that Houston lacks this. Other cities like New York, L.A, and Chicago have massive enterntainment that people are always attracted. I feel as if we are known for just our big corporations and refineries. Being the forth largest city people would imagine that we would have many things to do and citizens do but what about those who come from another city what do we have to offer them? I love Houston and I care about us becoming better and make more money for the good of our citizens living in Houston. I think Houston has a lot potential to become the center of fashion, or having a disney land, or just having many resorts where people come and have fun. At this point I still have to think about what concrns me the most if it is either crimes or the entertainment in Houston.

Essay-fitness!

For this essay i want to focus on fitness. Fitness is really important in my everyd ay life because I am always struggling whether I am healthy enough or not. I try to watch what I eat all the time, and exercise, but when I do not do so I feel like I am unhealthy and have a higher risk of having heart diseases and such. For this paper I want to research if it is necessary to go to the gym five times a week to mantain a perfect figure and a great health condition. For example, does exercise reduce the chances of me having cancer, brain damages, bone injuries, heart diseases. Or perhaps too much exercise can have some bad effects.

Although it is common sense that exercising effects are good, people do not always know what are the effects of a great workout and if it is helping you. People always say that if you exercise you loose weight but is it possible to gain weight even more. I want to know all about the effects of exercise and if its a great way to stay slim and healthy, or can exercise cause depression, any type of sickness. I hope that this research can help me know what balances I need to have with my health and how to mantain a perfect figure to feel better about myself. Overal i think it will be a great experience!

ESSAY!-FITNESS!

For my first essay I want to talk about fitness. Fitness is really important in my life because I feel that if I dont go work out I may gain more weight or be expose to diseases such as diabetes , high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. My question then would be is it really necessary to go to the gym five times a week to mantain a perfect figure and be healthy? I want to do a little experiment with this paper, basically I will be the person who will be working out five times a week, and see if i have become healthier by feeling better, loosing weight,and making sure my sugar and pressure level is normal. I think  overall this will be fun because I am working with the essay, and because it concerns me and many other people as well.

As technology keeps advancing so are the many music, videos, and image downloads. But when does a person go too far in the downloads? It is true that the more technology we have the more we tend to download. Those who download illegaly should be punished by paying up fines. It is certainly not far for those who use programs such as itunes to buy their music, and it certainly not fair either to the artist who put all their talents out there to produce the music that we like. By us downloading illegal music we are hurting the artists that we love to hear. If we continue to download music illegaly artists wont be able to make music, therefore they are either going to raise the price of their music or are going to periodically stop making music. The truth is that the songs on itunes are .99 cents up to $1,99. We spend more on other things such as clothes, shoes, purses. It is important for us to be aware of the situations here. We are stealing as well as hurting others who are trying to have earn an income as well.

Stereotypes

In the television show Glee, there are two groups. One is  trying to show their talent, a talent they did not even realize they had, and the other is simply following along to be popular or “cool”.  The “cool” group is afraid to be picked on and decides to hide their insecurities and fears and make others feel less than them. What the show Glee is demonstrating to the audience is simply the same thing we have seen in other movies or television shows. The audience can also witness this issue through movies such as “Step Up 2″ and “Mean Girls” which also cover familiar and boring ground topics like streotypes and such.  They each demonstrate the “cool” and “loser” groups and show how they manage  to break through those barriers.

In the television show, Glee, there is the football and cheerleaders who basically rule the school becuase they are the fittest, prettiest, and the most popular kids in high school. The football team picks on “losers” which are geeks or simply not the football team to show how strong and suprior they are which is just to hide their insecurities. The football lead joing the Glee team just because his spanish teacher kind of forced him to do so. He always had a thing for music but never followed what made him happy because others saw it as not normal. Instead he was in the football team where he was popular, had pretty girls, and was not the one being picked on. Similiarly we see this in the movie, “Mean Girls,” where Lindsey Lohan attends to a new school and wants to be known so she starts to hang out with the pretty girls who wear skirts and pink on certain days and they are to follow the lead of the group instead of being a young individual. Lindsey then is thrown out that group and realize that she should just be herself and people will enventually like her. The audience can relate these two television programs becuase they deal with trying to break stereotypes. It is common among high school to see this issue. There is always going to be the “geeks” and those who are in sports that everyone is going to admire simply because they play sports or are so good at something.

In reality people always go for what others thinks is the right thing to do. Most of the time they do  not look beyond and look at how talented they are at something. There is always certasin things like friends and family that are going to influence our own actions, but what many movies and shows are trying to teach everyone is that each individual should follow their passion, even if they are scared of not being accepted because there are plenty of other individuals who are waiting to follow their passion they just need to be guided.  Yes, the audience sees this issue in films, videos, and in real life over and over and it gets boring but is the reality of life.

Blog #1-English Hw

In the story “Orientation” by Daniel Orozco, talks about the first day at work, orientation. At the beginning it seems very overwhelming because there is so much to remember. Everyone has their own space and within than space there is a story behind each individual. Throughout the story there are several issues addressed in order to not be let go from the job. The issues deal with responsibility and efficiency; this means that if the worker is not efficient and is not following the policies addressed at the orientation the consequences may be to be terminated.
One of the issues in the story is talking to Anika Bloom is a dangerous risky thing to do. She is known for predicting deaths, when are where is going to happen. One day in a meeting with Barry Hacker, Anika’s palm began to bleed, fell and told Berry Hacker how his wife was going to die. Everyone in the company thought it was a joke until Barry Hacker’s wife died. Another employee was warned about her but thought it was all a sort of myth. Colin Heavey felt sorry for her because she had no one to talk to. He bought her a drink and after that he has not been the same. After that he was doomed and there is nothing he or everyone else to do to help him. The writer is making the argument to that Anika is someone who predicts death and that everyone should stay away from her.
The story does a really good job showing all the emotions and reasoning of its reader. There is definitely a lot of details involve as well as action telling. As a reader I was intrigued and seemed very overwhelmed with all the information given to me. It almost felt like I was in the orientation learning about the functions of the company. The writer uses periods, commas, and addresses questions to give the reader of how the orientation was. The writer also uses repetitive phrases like, “you may be let go!” if the employee does not do what he is supposed to. Also, the writer also addresses the importance of addressing any issues with his supervisor, “If you have any questions, ask your supervisor. If you can’t find your supervisor, ask Phillip Spiers. He sits over there. He’ll check with Clarissa Nicks. She sits over there “ (1). This is a good way to show the importance of asking the supervisor of the employee’s insecurities.
Over the entire story addresses many issues that the company has. The writer addresses them with details, and enough evidence to show why the writer is stating the issues he is addressing.
